Smith grew up in Bedford, New York. She worked as a film producer and director for over twenty years, learning on the job and eventually founding her own film company on Newbury Street in Boston. After encouraging her son’s art career, she began painting herself for the first time in 2005. Smith has been learning from some of the best painters in New England, which has given her a wide range of techniques, mostly in classical oil painting.
Smith's film experience has inspired her to go after framing a single moment in time that evokes nostalgic storytelling. Her landscape and still life work has been described as tranquil and serene, allowing a rest from the chaotic media we are bombarded with every day. Smith is constantly exploring new techniques for her plein air and studio work that will allow for simple, expressive interpretation.
