SoWa's September Partner: Boston Public Schools

This September, all proceeds from SoWa Open Market merchandise will be donated to art programs at Boston Public Schools (BPS). Check out the great work of BPS!

As the birthplace of public education, BPS is committed to transforming the lives of its 56,000 students through exemplary teaching in a system of innovative and welcoming schools.  With the support of BPS, every child has great teachers and school leaders who encourage them to develop the knowledge, skill, and character that will allow them to excel in college, their careers, and their lives.

Boston Public Schools emphasize the critical role that the arts play in a well-rounded education. In 2009, BPS began its Arts Expansion program focused on a coherent, sustainable approach to quality arts education for all BPS students. To support the expansion, local foundations, the school district, arts organizations, higher education institutions and the Mayor's office formed a public-private partnership to develop creative, engaged learners. In just eight years, BPS has had enormous success in changing the landscape for arts education in Boston. Since 2009, an additional 17,000 students have experienced the arts during the school day whether it be dance, music, theater, or visual + media arts.

“The arts deepen student’s learning, giving young people new ways to express themselves, gain confidence, learn through experimentation, and work with others. The arts allows them to explore and question the world around them; take pride, ownership, and make connections in their own personal lives.”

As the numbers continue to rise, those involved in BPS grow more and more hopeful for the public school system. BPS Executive Director for the Arts, Myran Parker Brass is particularly excited about the development for BPS arts programs - "The arts deepens student’s learning, giving young people new ways to express themselves, gain confidence, learn through experimentation, and work with others. The arts allows them to explore and question the world around them; take pride, ownership, and make connections in their own personal lives."

We are so excited to work with this group of education pioneers and encourage all visitors to pick up some SoWa Swag this month! Come by the SoWa Open Market info booth on a Saturday or Sunday between 10 Am to 4 Pm to support this incredible organization.
